Halloween Hootenanny!

I love Halloween.  I love my kindergarten kiddos.  I love trick or treat.  However...

I do not love... post-trick-or-treat kindergarten kiddos who are arguing incessantly and saying my name a bajillion times!

If your kiddos decide to be sweet, you can use this template to attach a note to their treats!

Grab the gift bag tags here... No tricks... just treats!

Here's a pic of what they look like copied on orangey construction paper and stapled to my cute candy corn bags from Big Lots!

Alrighty, wish me luck...
I have RECESS DUTY on the Friday after trick-or-treat!
If you don't hear from me, you'll know I didn't survive... :)

Sunday Surprise! Write the Room!

It's that spooky time of year!  You know?  That time of year when I hear (every 3 minutes) what one of my kinder kids is being for Halloween. Ha ha ha ha!   So far, I have heard of the following...  Bratz (seriously, how can something be named that?), Spiderman, any and all Disney Princesses, Iron Man, a witch, etc... I'm sure I'll hear many more during this week too... especially during my spooky, Halloween work stations!  YEA!

One of my spooky work stations is Halloween Write the Room!  Pick pick up the non-scary Halloween vocabulary here....  Halloween_Write_the_Room_Vocabulary!

Also, pick up the recording sheets... here... Halloween_Write_the _Room_RecordSheet!

I hope my kiddos love using their business like clipboards and writing tools to find and record all their Halloween vocabulary!  What are you doing (or are able to do) with Halloween this week?!

Favorite Read Aloud - Linky Party!

Courtney over at Swimming Into Second is hosting a...

Who doesn't love talking about children's literature?!  So, join in and link up!  :)

My favorite children's book of... all time... is... (drum roll please....)

There is just something timeless about this book!  I have an insane adoration for Kevin Henkes... the way he writes and how he uses fabulous, descriptive vocabulary in his writing.  I love all his books, but Chrysanthemum takes the cake for me.  My number one, all time, favorite, children's book!

So, head on over to see what all the other teachers in our blogger circle love, appreciate, and find inspiring in their classrooms!

A huge thank you!

As most of you know, I love yoga!
As most teachers, I'm stressed and need to find ways to make time for myself.  Yoga helps me do that!  (Yee haw yoga!)

But, have you ever thought about your kiddos?  When do THEY have time for themselves?  When do they have the time to be mindful of how they feel, are given the opportunity to calm down and refocus their energy in positive and meaningful ways?

I've seen yoga do that with my kindergarten children, and I love sharing how good their bodies and minds can feel after even a short yoga practice!

There are oodles of resources out there on the interwebs...
But, I have found lots of information at  Yoga In My School recently sponsored a giveaway with  Move With Me Action Adventures, and I was one of the lucky recipients of a Move With Me yoga DVD.  (Hooray!  Free things!)

Well, today was the 1st day we tried our new DVD and... it was wonderful!  My kindergartners LOVED it!  The guided practice includes a child friendly story about a little boy and his scooter, as well as all the things (people, animals, plants) they experience along the way.  I definitely want to invest in some of the other DVDs in the series!

Here are some pictures of my kindergarten kiddos using the SMART Board to complete their daily yoga practice before work station time! :)

Riding our scooters!

Here comes the sun!

Putting our scooters to rest against the tree!

In our speed boats!

So, thank you Yoga in My School and thank you Move With Me Action Adventures!  We love our new DVD, and I we thank you for expanding our kindergarten yoga practice!

Halloween Dress Up - Linky Party!

How fun is this?!
Reagan over at...

is hosting a Halloween Dress Up Linky Party, and I'm joining in! :)

Now, we don't dress up at our school, but I ADORE Halloween, and my hubby and I frequently participate in dressing-up and enjoying the holiday!

Here are some previous costumes...

Snow White... eating a cheeseburger! :)

Me with an arrow through my head and my Colonel Sanders hubby!

Anyone like the move The Big Lebowski?  We went to Lebowskifest and I dressed up as an Achiever while my hubs dressed up at Walter Sobchak.

Now, I can't tell you this year's costume yet.  One year, we told people what we were going to be, and guess what... someone came to our party dressed as the exact same thing!  YIKES!  We were annoyed! :)  Thus, we are super tsunami secret until the day of now! :)   I promise to post pictures post-Halloween.  Hooray!

Boo!  Boo!  Boo!  Boo!  What are you going to be this Halloween?

Here is a quick and easy sight word coloring page that can fill those extra 5 minutes you may have before lunch, recess, or whenever.

How many times do children need to see a word before they know it?  All I know is it's LOTS!  Here's another chance to drill those special words in their noggins!  :)

Pick up the following words (the, a, my that) here...

Just say... om!

Well, I'm trying to say om after hacking and coughing...
And, coughing and hacking...
And, well, finally giving in...
I did it.  I got a sub.

I can NOT kick this bronchitis, so I went to the doc today, had a new antibiotic prescribed and am laying low.  She also gave me some cough medicine, so hopefully I'll be able to make it through a picture book without coughing up a lung next week!  Ha! :)  One of my K kiddos said, "Boy, Mrs. Davis, you sure must be sick!"  Yesiree, I am.

Well, at least it gives me time to catch up on my blogging and blog reading!  A favorite thing happened to me this week.  (Yes, among all the sneezes and wheezes, good things happened!)

I told my K kids we were going to skip yoga so we could get into work stations... and... they... through... a... fit!  This will probably be the only time I'll embrace my kiddos arguing with me! :)  They were appalled that I would even think to skip yoga.  It has become something they expect and love!  HOORAY!  This makes my heart full to know they love it and it brings them some inner peace during their hectic days!

Also, have I mentioned I've had parents tell me that they've loved seeing their children come home and show them their yoga poses?  We're doing letter Aa this week, so we've added Airplane and Alligator pose to our repertoire.  Here are a few blurry-ish pics taken with my BlackBerry during yoga this week...
Being a Rocking Horse!  You have to use those tummy muscles to get back up!

My Snakes!  Lying in the grass with the warm sun shining down on them.  (We do a lot of visualization during our yoga time!)

"Do Nothing" Pose aka (for adults) Corpse Pose aka "lying like a rag doll."  They ASK for this pose all the time!   Especially after recess!

I'm so proud of my kids.  They love trying new poses, and I love that they enjoy practicing yoga with me!
What are you doing that makes your heart happy in your classroom?!  :)

Holly Bloggy Christmas!

Have you seen this?  Have you seen this?  Have you seen this?

Check it out and start getting in to the holiday season!
Fa la la la la, la la la la!

Where's that sound?

Much to my chagrin, we do a letter of the week in my kindergarten building.  This was difficult to transition to after working for 2 years at a Literacy Collaborative school.  Have I mentioned I adore Literacy Collaborative?   Regardless, it's a never ending balancing act between my old ways and the firm phonics foundation that appears my current reading series.

I have to find ways to entertain myself and my students novel ways to introduce phonics concepts.  One way is with... drum roll please... paint chips!  No, we're not licking them!  HA!  We're using them, as many folks do, as Elkonin sound boxes.  Anyone else pilfer through paint samples at their local Lowes or Home Depot?  It is quite fun!

From there, we work using markers of any kind... plastic chips, bears, pennies, etc. and mark where we hear different sounds.  Instant, sturdy, FREE, Elkonin Boxes!

We then translate that skill by writing the letter we're studying in the correct box under a variety of pictures.  Grab this freebie called Where's the Nn Sound?

I hope everyone is having a good weekend.  I'm nursing myself back to health after the kindergarten trifecta of illness... bronchitis, ear infection, and sinus infection!  This leaves my loads of time browse blogs, Facebook, and catch up on my magazine reading.  Woo hoo! Wish I could do this minus the hacking cough, but what can you do?!
