What's NOT Wrong?

I'm doing it!  Even though it has felt impossible, I'm going to share the love, feel the joy, and share what's NOT wrong in my world today!  I hope you can do the same on this wild, wonderful, and wacky Wednesday!

Here's what you do...
Right click, save, and repost the above image.
Think of FIVE fabulous and fantastic things that aren't wrong right now.
Post on your bloggity blog.
Link up below!  Simple as that! :)

Here's my list of what's not wrong...
  1. My class is NOT wrong.  I can't even begin to express how conscious they are of what's going on with me and my family.  I get hugs at just the right time.  I get e-mails/notes from families telling they're thinking of and praying for my family.  AMAZING!
  2. Flip flops are NOT wrong.  My feet need a break from boots and shoes.  It's supposed to be 65 degrees today, so my painted piggy toes are out and about.
  3. Carry-ins are NOT wrong.  My mouth is salivating thinking of all the yummy food in the teacher's lounge.  Hooray for leap year birthday's!  Our "13 year old" lunch lady is awesome!
  4. One of my students' case worker is NOT wrong. Talk about wonderful!  How often does one spend an hour, working with ALL the kiddos while observing her little one.  She even asked if she could come have lunch with us and bring cupcakes for the class.  (Did I mention she's a retired teacher???)
  5. 68 Degrees & SUNNY is NOT wrong!  I'm sorry.  It's February 29th, and our kids aren't wearing their coats to recess. AWESOME!
What's NOT wrong in your world today?  I'm smiling, and my classroom windows are open.  Whew!  Perfect! :)

Sticker books & pitiful looks...

Okay, this post is not about teaching.
That's not true.  It's somewhat about teaching.
Something is always about teaching, because I am a teacher.
If something happens to my students... it happens to me on some level.
Fortunately or unfortunately, if something happens to ME, it happens to my students too.

Rewind one week.
A phone call to my father about a needle biopsy he had the previous week.
Uh oh...
Stage 2, non-Hodgkins lymphoma, in his abdomen.

Fast forward to tomorrow.
Chemotherapy port being surgically implanted.

Fast forward to Thursday.
Chemotherapy from 10 AM until 5 PM.

Rewind to last Friday.
Letter sent home to my students' families giving them the abbreviated version of what's going on, however, reassuring them, even if I'm out, their children are being cared for, learning, and enjoying their kindergarten year.  It was a letter I never thought I'd have to write, but here I am, and I did.

Rewind to 10 hour ago.
My kids are so curious about when I'm going to be gone.  I explained that my dad is sick, and when you're a grown-up (seriously, when did that happen?), sometimes you have to help take care of your parents when they're sick.  This, in turn, got us talking about... sticker books! :)

One of my darlings raised their hand.
"When I'm sick, my mom lets me get out my sticker book!"
(Ooohs and ahhhs from the other 20 kids.)
Me: "Should I get my dad a sticker book?"
(Eager nods.)

I've already put together a chemotherapy entertainment bag full of sudoku (I hate them!), crosswords (I love them!), and word finds (I am indifferent!).  It doesn't matter what I want to do, it's about my dad, and I have no idea whether he'd enjoy any of those things with an IV of scary fluids being put into his chest.

I also got him snacks since he's going to be there all day!  Pistachios, chocolate covered pretzels, and dried pineapple.  I figure, if you're going to be in chemo, you might as well get the good shit! :)

I am also LOADING up an old iPod for him so he can tap his feet, wiggle his fingers, and relax to the soothing sounds of The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Who, etc.

So, as a whole, preparing for this has included preparing my little lovelies for my absence... knowing there might be more times that I have to be away.  My colleagues have been beyond amazing, allowing me to cry, vent, flip out, etc.

And, I know... I just know, that God is with me and going to change me and help me grow through this experience.  He has given me a spectacular group of children with families to match (hello, e-mail from a parent saying they're praying for me & thanking me for being so open and honest with them!)... and I love them.

So, I may be posting a lot to cope.  I may not be posting at all.  I don't know how this is all going to play out, but I know I wanted to let the friends I've made in the blogosphere aware of what's up and ask for all the positive vibes & prayers you're willing to give! :)

Thank you already... for all the Dr. Seuss freebies you've been posting!  That has been a huge help in getting my sub plans ready for Thursday & Friday.  See, you're helping and didn't even know it!  You girlies rock, and I appreciate having another outlet through this scary and confusing process.

Yoga Video Freebie!

Is it Sunday?  It sure feels like Sunday.  I'm lounging, watching The Cleveland Show, anxiously awaiting another school day tomorrow, thrilled that tomorrow is President's Day, and I have nada to do!  Woot!  Seriously, how excited are you to have a three day weekend? :)  Not only is this one of my favorite Social Studies topics to cover, I L-O-V-E three day weekends!

I know I've been MIA for a week, but it has been crazy busy!

Monday: Teaching buddy was out of the building, and I had to do the prep for her sub.  Yikes!
Tuesday:  Snow Day.  Valentine's Day.  My in-laws own a flower shop, so I helped deliver flowers all day.
Wednesday:  Teaching buddy out again, prep, yikes!  Celebrate Valentine's Day with my little ones.
Thursday: After school meeting.
Friday: Playing catch up at school.  Out late with buddies, exhausted!

I was out of town yesterday, and today I went to the grocery and caught up on laundry.  Oh yeah.  I also napped for 2 hours today. (Hooray for naps!)  So, I am thrilled to be able to catch up on sleep, relaxing, and blog stalking! :)

While on Facebook today, I found an awesome resource from the fabulous people at Move With Me Action Adventures.  If you go to their Facebook page... Move With Me Action Adventures - Facebook Page and like them, you can click on the "Free Download" and enjoy a free DVD download of "The Magic Scooter."  It's a fabulous yoga DVD that my kindergarten students LOVE!

Check out my blog post and review from October about this great DVD... http://carriedawaykindergarten.blogspot.com/2011/10/huge-thank-you.html
with pics of my kiddos working through the practice! :)

I know you'll love it, and I just had to share!  Happy Saturday, er, I mean Sunday... but it sure feels like Saturday since we get to sleep in tomorrow.  Woo hoo! :)

Five pounds of pork!

Have you ever cooked that?  For just two people?

I did that today in the slow cooker, and I have a ginormous amount of shredded pork left over.
(Yes, I will be eating pork tacos for lunch... and brownies... I just made brownies for Valentine's Day...)
I still have no idea what else I'm going to make with my leftovers.  If you have any ideas, please let me know!

In honor of Valentine's Day (and yes, we can party it up at my school!) I'm linking up with...

and telling what I love!

Who?  What?  When?  Where?  Why do you love?  Link up and see what your other blogger pals are saying!

Happy Monday! :)

Playing Catch Up!

Whoa!  Where did last week go?

It started out all calm and cool.... then...
BAM!  It was a busy Wednesday, the 100th day on Thursday, and a Waiver Day on Friday.

Now, it's Sunday, and I'm trying to play catch up.
(With a cup of coffee and CBS Sunday Morning in the background of course...)

During the week, we worked on a lot of math!  Every morning, as my kiddos come in, we answer a question of the day on the SMART Board, and then start working on Morning Math Tubs.  If you haven't checked out Shari Sloane's Math Centers & Games, you better hop on it right now!  My little ones reinforce all the math concepts we've been covering, each morning, by playing games, working on activities, and having fun!

Check it out...

I love my little mathematicians!

We also did a lot of 100th Day activities on Thursday!  My kids were so excited, and we even dressed up like we were 100 years old!

Dot art on the 100th Day!  I LOVE my School Smart Poster Paint daubers.

Roll & tally... 100 times!  Do you love our 100th Day hats?  My kids thought they were hilarious!

Writing our names over and over again to fill in one hundred squares.  We colored them in afterwards!

And, last but not least, counting out 100 pieces of confetti for our 100th Day confetti toss.  We  (9 kindergarten rooms) go to our gym and count to 100 by 1's, 10's, and 5's.  Then, when we get to 100, we throw all the confetti in the air.  The kids then pick it all up and get ready to count and throw again.  It's AWESOME!

Thank you to
Fun in First
for all your freebies that helped out with my 100th day!

I'll close this post with me, 100 years young, on the 100th day! :)

Have a great start to your week!  I can't wait to share the Valentine's Day fun we have, our new work stations, and all the hoopla going on in Kindergarten this week!

Now, off to blog stalking, relaxing, reading, watching SNL from last night, and counting the minutes until the Grammy's.  (Seriously, do you not LOVE Foo Fighters, Bruce Springsteen, and a Beach Boys reunion?!)

I love Sundays!

Mishmash Monday...

So... it's Monday.  Have you ever seen that movie, Office Space?  When they say, "Looks like someone has a case of the Mondays!"  I feel like that more this evening, than I did this morning.  My weekend was okay, minus the belly being all out of sorts again.  (I blame the kids germs.)  I did have fun watching the Super Bowl yesterday and talking about it with my kids today.

Here are some fav comments from my little ones..
"What's the Super Ball?"
 "Huh?"
"I watched the Puppy Bowl!"

Priceless.
Lets just hope they didn't see that little ole middle finger during the halftime show!  Yikes!  I didn't even notice it until they talked about it on The Today Show this morning.

On to other things... a quick yoga side note from my previous post.  I've had some folks asking what to get/do/have/etc. if you are crunched for time.  I highly suggest these...

They are to the point, easy to understand, child friendly, classroom friendly, and time friendly.  Here's a picture I took of one of my cards...
The front of the card shows the pose name, purpose, and what your goal of practicing that pose should be.

The back of the card goes into how to practice a pose, step by step, as well as discussing how it feels, etc.

We use these cards while transitioning between activities, in line at the restroom, waiting to get to a related arts class, etc.  Convenient, to the point, meaningful movement for an  early childhood or elementary classroom! :)

And, I want to remind you, I'm no yoga expert.  I'm a teacher who happen to love yoga and has found a place for it in her classroom.  It's going to be different for every teacher, every class, everyone... but through practice, you can find a more centered and mindful group of children... and hopefully the same feelings for yourself!

I hope to talk about setting up a yoga work station this week!  So, if you have any questions about that, get them ready!

I did say this was a mishmash, didn't I?

On to Farley's traditional "Currently" for the month of February!  (How is it already February?)  Link up with her here...  Farley's February Currently

Here's mine..

So, go link up immediately!  Do it!  It's fun!  I promise! :)

Okay, the hubs is home from band practice.  (Yes, I'm married to a rock star!)  I'm going to go visit with him before I fall asleep from listening to yoga music and being in my jammies.  (Love it!)

Hope you are having a MARVELOUS Monday!

Sunday stalking...

I am exceptionally stalkery today.  I've been up & down, left & right, over & under in my blog roll today, and I love what I've seen folks!  I've found some perfect additions to my Valentine's Work Stations that are coming up, and I appreciate all the 100th Day posts as well.  Our "100th Day" is on Thursday, and my kinder kiddos are so excited!  (We modify our start day since we have staggered entry at the beginning of the year...)  I'll make sure to post pictures of my "100 year old" kindergartners on Thursday!

On to yoga... slow and steady is still winning the race, and I want to share how and what materials I accumulated to do yoga in my classroom!

In my last yoga post, I had a list of book suggestions for you.  Today, I have other materials (mats, games, cards, CDs, DVDs, etc.)  So, hold on tight!

When I decided that I wanted to extend my yoga in the classroom, I was at a loss for how I would accumulate materials.  Then, it dawned on me... Donors Choose!  I created a proposal for a centers set of mats, materials, games, and cards.  Lucky me, my project was funded during last summer, and I was able to receive my materials at the end of September!

Here are some of the things we use in our room...

Yoga Bingo   Yoga Matching (memory)

My kinder kiddos are OBSESSED with the "Yoga Slide" on Music for Little Yogis and our Scooter & Me DVD!  They love it!

I have to say the cards, CD's, and DVD's have been easy ways for me to incorporate whole group yoga into the classroom.  After they became familiar with the procedure, I was able to have them transition into working on yoga in work stations. But, I'll talk more about that later!  :)

I hope this list of additional children's yoga resources has helped you start thinking of whether yoga and meaningful movement might be a good fit in your classroom.  I can honestly say, it's been a wonderful experience in mine...

I think I might even be up for writing another Donors Choose grant and get a class set of mats and some more resources if I can! :)

I hope you have a SUPER Sunday!  Seriously, are you going to watch the game or just the commercials?!  :)

What's NOT Wrong Wednesday!

Yesterday, I woke up and had the sneezing fit of the century.  I decided, I must be allergic to waking up.  (This could be true with my nap obsession and all...)  It turns out, I actually am getting a... ugh... cold!  Cue the horns of displeasure from the Price is Right... wah... wah... waaaaah!

Even with a cold a-brewing, I can still find plenty of things that aren't wrong... link up and share the love this Wednesday (or ANY day you need feel the good!)...

Find five things in your life that aren't wrong, copy and paste the picture below and link up your post at the bottom! :)

  • Quiet children AND classical music are NOT wrong!  My kids are coming back from lunch, and I cannot believe the quietness of my kindergarten kiddos.  I LOVE it!  (And, I think they do too, I hear whispers to stay quiet from all around my room.)  Hooray!
  • Our warm weather is NOT wrong!  O-M-G!  It is supposed to be 50 degrees today.  Woot!
  • My kids just realizing one of my teaching buddies is having a baby is NOT wrong!  My students asking ME if I'm having a baby might be wrong though... LOL!
  • Going to bed early is NOT wrong!  I went to bed at 10 PM, which is unheard of... my guess it's due to my waking up allergy cold.  I do feel a bit more energetic this morning.
  • Groundhog Day is NOT wrong!  My kids are so excited about tomorrow and our groundhog puppets we are putting together today.  Also, my niece's 7th birthday is tomorrow. She's my own personal groundhog! :)
So, c'mon and link up and share the love.

Also, don't fret my pets... I will have more resources for yoga, as well as ways to organize coming this week.  See, slow and stead wins the race, and that's how I'm going to be putting this info together for you! :)

Hope you enjoy your Wednesday!
